PACT Housekeeping Meetings

Housekeeping: Week 15

We had a request for information from the planning office this week; they asked for clarification on some materiality for the Bridge.

We had a chat about some of this, Sav and Nell already have a plan for the eaves and slats, but we all agreed on uncovering most of the pergola, and we have left a clear covering over the proposed bike and bin store at the side of the house, so that things that are stored can stay dry, and we can also minimise blocking any sunlight to the garden, and to the neighbours. By keeping the pergola open, we will be able to grow plants over it, creating a canopy which might present some grant and support opportunities to get it completed.

Sav then walked us through our digital model, talking through some of the internal design choices that have been made, starting with the kitchen. We’d like to get rid of the island since it doesn’t really add to the space, it isn’t able to host many people around it, and it seems to mostly be used as storage, though all drawers and cupboards seem to be full and difficult to navigate, and we know we can come up with a new, more efficient system.

We are also proposing removing the kitchen window and replacing it with a door to the Bridge. Everyone is happy with this and we identified a number of positives to having a door here, these being: stopping the heat from the kitchen being lost to the Bridge, a second access point direct to the kitchen if the other door becomes inaccessible for any reason, fire regulations. We all think it would seem like a lost opportunity to keep the window here and keep the kitchen and the Bridge as completely separate spaces.

He then walked us through the front door and down the hallway so that we could see the effect of Dan’s curved wall. We’re still exploring the materiality of this, ordering samples and ideating what we can do with this space but we’re really excited about it, we think it has so much potential to be something really special. We will be talking to Lee (Horbury) about it when we meet him this Friday, so we’ll have a better understanding of how it will be done then.

We will also talk with Lee about our fire strategy, before we go to Dan’s contact from the hospital. We know that the window between the stairs and the kitchen will need to be fire rated, and we will need to be careful when thinking about the threshold between the hallway and the Bridge. We also know that the cellar might be tricky to figure out as the current fire escape outside of the downstairs window isn’t currently a viable option.

We also spotted our planning notice go up at the property, exciting times!
